Credit cards and identity theft
Credit cards became an “extremely popular payment instrument” in the US after its
introduction (Chakravorti, 2003). According to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of consumer
finances, 73 percent of families in the US had credit cards in 2007 (Bucks et al., 2009).The
number of payment cards with credit functions grew from about 1.25 billion in 2004 to
almost 1.33 billion in 2007 (Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems, 2009).
However, this number decreased to 1.28 billion in 2008. At the same time the number of
credit card transactions grew from roughly 19.13 billion in 2004 to 23.90 billion in 2008.
These figures represent the total number of credit card transactions of Visa,MasterCard,
Discover, American Express, Diners Club and other retailer cards. The value of
transactions also grew from $1.6 billion in 2004 to $2.5 billion in 2008
