When the Avanza was launched in Indonesia it was available in two models: the 1.3 E and 1.3 G. In January 2005, the Avanza 1.3 S was added with a 1.3-liter VVT-i engine and four-speed automatic that only sold 5,000 units. A new exterior color (black) was added at the same time. The Avanza later became one of the best selling cars in Indonesia.
The Avanza was restyled near the end of the third quarter of 2006 with a new VVT-i engine, new grille, new bumpers, new interior, and new front and rear lamps.[12] The 1.3 S was replaced by the 2006 Avanza 1.5 S, using a new 1.5-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine along with the new anti-lock braking system. The 1.3 E and 1.3 G models were upgraded to use the 1.3-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine from the outgoing 1.3 S model.
