Worldwide, severe mental illnesses (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression) take on a chronic course with frequent relapses, deterioration in function and a downward social drift. Severe mental illness (SMI) is often associated with lost economic production and inability to relate with loved ones. In low income countries like Uganda, mental illness is also often associated with lack of proper care resulting in gradual deterioration in social functioning of the individual and finally demanding total care.
