In the U.S. there are just a few breeds of commercial broilers
that represent birds with the genetic capacity for rapid growth and
enhanced feed efficiency. Selecting for these traits does not
prevent the intestinal colonization of Salmonella which is unfortunate
since Salmonella can have a deleterious impact upon the production
efficiency of the bird (Wang et al., 2014). Therefore, identification of breeds
that are resistant to colonization is of interest because incorporation of these
genetics into commercial broilers would result in both economic and food safety benefits.
