The shortage of jobs and the low salaries have resulted in the phenomenon of seven million overseas Filipino works (OFWs), or overseas contract works (OCWs). These people range from engineers to nurses to domestic helpers, and remit over U.S. $6 billion per annum—the largest single source of foreign exchange for the country. They live far from their families, whom they support, and may return only once every two or three years. However, this brain drain is a serious loss to the Philippines in terms of vital skills.
