PDI – Power Distance
PDI, or power distance dimension indicates the attitude or acceptance of people in each country toward being inequality in the society. From the range 100 to 0, zero to 50 indicates low power distance which means people are being more equal to the other. 51 to 100 indicates high power distance which means people accept being inequality in the society.
The PDI Score of Myanmar is 26 which mean being inequality is not that accepted in Myanmar society (Rarick& Nickerson, 2006). From interviewing with Mr.PaulMang, a Myanmar student of Mahidol University International College, we can see that he still respect the one who is older than him but for someone who is younger than him, he doesn’t aspect to receive respect from others. The attitude toward employer is informal. Myanmar people can stand up and point out employers’ mistakes.
The PDIscore of Thailand is 64 which is slightly high but still lower than the average of many neighbor countries. Thai people accepted being inequality. The flow of information is mostly top-down, or hierarchy. Employees mostly pay respect and royalty in toward their employer in order to have guidance and protection. The attitude toward people in high position is quite formal (Thailand, n.d.).
