Sia Yae (Somchai Rerkvararak) was born in 1936 to an overseas Chinese father and a Chinese-Thai mother. His father was a goldsmith in Angthong, a paddy-growing ares in the central region. Sia Yae had only four years of elementary education and in his young days he earned a living from bicycle repairs. The turning point of his life came after his father s death in the mid-1950s when he opened a gambling den,he expanded his bicycle repair business into a metal workshop producing iron gates and windows, and later extended into trading in construction materials. As he became more successful he began making contacts with local officials and politicians. He was able to secure government contracts to supply materials for construction of schools and roads in the province, and gradually set himself up as a construction contractor. His contacts with local officialdom drew even closer in 1966 When at the age of thirtly he married a woman who was related both to an influential police officer who later rose to a high position in the police department and also to a major dealer in arms for the Thai military.
In about the early 1960s he began moving into the timber reade as part of his construction materials business. In the mid-1970s, when there was a shortage of timber in the market, Sia Yae moved into the lumber processing business and rented a small sawmill in the neighbouring province of Ayutthaya. Later he bought the mill in Ayutthaya and expanded by buying more sawmills in Sakon Nakhon, Chaiyaphum and Loci in the mortheastern region. Next he used his connections with police and army officers to obtain logging concession in many provinces in the central and northeast regions.
