Hopkins and Cutfield (9) suggested that PA changes
do not alter insulin sensitivity in normal pregnancy, to
protect optimal growth of the fetus. However, also outside
of pregnancy, it has been reported repeatedly that in people
with higher insulin sensitivity at baseline, PA had not
much of an effect, whereas in those who were more insulin
resistant, greater PA-induced changes in insulin sensitivity
were found (23–25). All in all, thismaysuggest a threshold
for the degree of insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals
that cannot be improved on, even with physical activity.
Thus, taking baseline maternal insulin sensitivity and
body weight status into account is important when assessing
effects of PA, also in pregnancy.
