The Earth … Our home for millions of years … but planet Earth is in danger.
Climate change, because of human activity and the demand for energy,
is causing huge problems: the ice caps are melting, animals and birds are
losing their habitats, sea temperatures are rising, coral reefs are dying, rain
forests are disappearing, and floods, drought, and famine are widespread.
The problems may be serious, but there are many ways to protect the
environment. By being “green” – that is, by thinking about the environment –
we can all help save our planet.
Think about your carbon footprint and how you travel. Can you walk or cycle
instead of going by car?
What about the food you eat? Does it come from far away? Can you buy
your food from local producers or even grow your own?
What about the energy you use in your home? Try turning the central
heating down lower and remember to turn off lights when you leave
the room.
You can also reduce your carbon footprint by recycling and reusing as
much as possible. Most towns and cities now have recycling points where
you can recycle materials such as glass, cardboard, paper, and plastic.
Also, try not to buy goods that have a lot of packaging.
Natural resources such as wood and water are very important for all life on
Earth. Water is a precious resource and there are easy ways to save water
at home. Have a quick shower instead of a bath and remember to turn off
the tap when you are brushing your teeth. You can even water the garden
with washing up water!
Plants and animals are suffering as a result of climate change. But by
being green, you are preserving the Earth for wildlife. You are also helping
protect the Earth for future generations.
As you can see, there are many ways to protect our environment and save
our planet.
