After-School Jobs
Many students are eager to get their first part-time job. They look forward to having money to buy new electronic devices, clothes, or a car, or to pay for college, or to help out their families. Whatever the reason, earning money teaches students about responsibility. Beyond that, a job can also be an opportunity to make new friends outside school, and to have new experiences in a new environment. At its best, having a part-time job is an exciting step toward independence.
On the other hand, going to work each day after school has its drawbacks. Time spent working is time taken away from studying. When there is too little time for studying, grades often drop. Additionally, putting in extra hours can be very tiring, and students who are exhausted will not be able to focus as well in class. The combination of reduced study time and being tired can cause students to fall increasingly further behind at school.
While there are many benefits to having a part-time job, students should always put their studies before work. For most students, the best plan is to wait until after graduation before working.
