However, less attention has been given to the interaction
between environmental controversies (and specifically energy controversies),
movements, and place-making. In this article, we show
that the transformation of matters of fact into matters of concern
also involves the places movements are trying to ‘‘defend’’; as
places themselves turn into the object of contestation. As Auyero
(2006) contends:
Places are sites and objects of contentious politics. Collective
actions swirl around physical locations with pre-existing meanings.
Joint struggles can also modify the symbolism of certain
settings.
