The 777 design program provided Boeing with an opportunity to rectity many of the problems that had emerged during its product development history The company implemented two complementary innovations (1) a digitally based design system and (2) cross functional design/build teams (DBTs) These programs created many challenges for Boeing For example, extensive technical training was required for all eniployees who would be using the digital design systems Additionally, eniployees needed assistance adapting to new reporting relationship and commumcation patterns. The total cost of rmplementing and operating the computer aided design technology and systems was difficult to assess with complete accuracy Although digital dedign and the creation of the associated DBT structure had been costly Boeing official felt that the system would more than pay for itself over time.
