Define goals ahead of training
The first step in the process of measurement is to have a clear understanding about what you want a training program, course or onboarding session to accomplish.
Andrea D. Cranfill is the co-founder and principal of FlashPoint, a talent management consulting firm in Indianapolis, which specializes in talent development, talent processes, and coaching. She believes it is important to define desired outcomes before starting a new training course or program.
“Organizations should know upfront what outcomes they want to accomplish and then design learning programs around those goals,” Cranfill said. “Decide prior to the training what metrics will matter after the training is conducted. You can then think about what type of measurement is appropriate for the business need you are trying to solve.”
