In this study the extracts were cleaned up on multilayer silica columns containing basic, neutral and acidic silica, eluted with n-hexane. This cleanup is designed for analysis of persistent organic pollutants and removes a large fraction of non-persistent organic compounds, so the responses found in this test belong to this type of contaminants. The alternative cleanup method used in the same samples was the deactivated (10 percent H2O) silica, which only removes interfering large compounds, and the final extracts contained both persistent and less persistent contaminants. A comparison of bioassay responses after these two cleanup methods indicated the proportion of persistent agonists in the extracts. Sample St1 has after multilayer cleanup the highest bio-TEQ, and probably contained a higher proportion of persistent organic compounds compared to the rest of the wetland.
