Unfortunately, the next batch was little better – and the next. In fact the whole season’s cuttings from Willowgrant Farm were according to Gevblates very poor. It was not until late April, half way through the season that David McKay also realised that he had misunderstood or worse, it had been misrepresented as to when the asparagus had been sown initially. Top quality asparagus cannot be achieved until the third year and this, he now understood, was the second year. He told David McKay that Willowgrant asparagus was never destined to be anything better than normal quality.
