collapsed forcing fishermen to look for ‘alternative
products’. Capturing clam shrimp branchiopods, locally
known as ‘conchilla’, grew into an economically
valuable alternative. According to government databases,
the conchilla harvest averaged 71 metric tons
(wet weight) per year between 1981 and 2000, reaching
more than 200 tons in 1984, 1988, 1990 and 1991
(Martínez-Pantoja, 2002). The presence of conchilla
