because of encephalitis 2 days after the onset of FN. In contrast,
Klebsiella sp. was detected in the blood of patient No. 18, and the
bacterial DNA copy number was as many as 1.20 105 copies/mL.
However, the serum CRP titer was quite low, at 6.17 mg/dL. This
patient was started on biapenem but she did not respond well, so
she was switched from biapenem to doripenem and vancomycin on
Day 4. Owing to a catheter-related infection, her central-vein
catheter was removed on Day 5. She defervesced on Day 6.
The Antibiotic therapy was not given to 95 of 97 FNEs before the
FN onset, so FN developed in only 2 patients (No. 7, No. 12) during
preventive antibiotic therapy.
Blood was collected from patient No. 7 during treatment with
tazobactam/piperacillin. The blood culture was negative, but E.
faecium was detected by the real-time PCR assay. Similarly, blood
was collected from patient No. 12 during treatment with doripenem
and amikacin. The blood culture was negative, but S. mitis
was detected by the real-time PCR assay.
E. faecium, A. junii, Acinetobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Enterobacter sp.
and Escherichia.coli were detected by the real-time PCR assay in the
