The assessment and treatment of antenatal anxiety is
complicated, with many factors to be considered before safe,
holistic care can be provided. It is critical to conduct a thorough
assessment, ascertain whether a woman dealt with any
anxiety disorders prior to her pregnancy, and examine what treatment modality, if any, is currently being used. It may be
more important to her and the infant’s health to control severe
anxiety than to try and attempt a pregnancy completely
free of psychotropic medications. As research on antenatal
anxiety disorders is lacking, it is essential that further
research be conducted to better understand and treat them
safely and effectively. Utilizing evidence-based practice leads
to safer care, and nurses must have more research available
to support interventions used in treating antenatal anxiety.
