What is an environmentally sustainable society?
By Elin I. Svanes
An environmentally sustainable society is a community which is in balance with nature. That is that people in society do actions that are good for mother earth. The “actions” can be not to use the car, to remember to turn off the light in your living room. So you can do one small thing, and if everyone does it, will it hence be good for the globe. My family and I do many daily deeds for the globe in our regular routines. We do not use our car very much, for the most part in the weekends. I ride my bicycle to school every day, also my mum when she buys food at the super market she takes her bike.
It is important not to use your car or any other vehicle that spreads CO2 which is bad for the environment. The gas CO2 destroys the Ozone layer. My dad, in theory, drives a vehicle to work every day; even though he still minimizes the CO2 discharge when he uses the public transportation from time to time. The public transportation is a good thing for the globe, because many people use one bus and then there are fewer cars on the road.
I think people in Belgium are very good at recycling. When you recycle you get new items from old things. Another idea you can do is to buy fewer clothes of better quality so that they will last longer. Then you throw less clothes and you help the environment. So before throwing items please sort the garbage. Please think about recycling and avoid producing a lot of garbage. Remember that plastic and other materials do not rotten in nature. As I said earlier in the paper you can do small things and it will still have a big outcome, for example to turn off the light when you are heading for bed. You save electricity when you turn off the light and this is positive, because many countries today get their electricity from coal burning.
