Before the Career/Development Conversation, read the employee’s self-assessment. Reflect on the employee’s performance against business goals and competencies. Think through the Growth Factors (see next section) to form your initial perspectives on the employee’s potential.

Explain the People Review process.
Review the employee’s self-assessment. Go through each point, asking the employee to explain and elaborate. Listen to make sure you thoroughly understand the employee’s perspective.
Confirm the employee’s career goals. Be sure that you clearly understand the employee’s willingness to relocate and interest in international and cross-functional roles.
Ask questions to clarify your understanding of the employee’s self-assessment and career goals.
Share your initial perspectives on the employee’s performance, potential, strengths and potential next roles.
Let the employee know that you will provide them feedback after the People Review meeting.
