FNCE102 Financial Instruments, Institutions and Markets
This course focuses on the role of financial markets and financial institutions in facilitating the flow of funds to finance investments by corporations, governments and individuals. There are three main emphases: to understand the functions of the financial institutions, to appreciate the workings of financial markets and to present the instruments traded in the financial markets. Six key markets - that of deposits, credit, bond, money market, equities and foreign exchange - will be examined in detail.
This is a course that requires a framework presented from the text and many layers of updating from newspapers, trade journals and web links to tie that framework to Asian financial markets, with a focus on local markets. Consequently, students are required to keep up to date with happenings in financial markets, and in so doing, be able to relate them with the concepts learnt in class.
Students are expected (though there is no explicit requirement) to have completed FNCE101 before taking this course as this course involves more advanced concepts and applications.
