The identified isolates were tabulated and presented in Table 1. In this table the number of isolates for a given species is listed for each of the source of egg collection. A total of 226 cultures belonging to 20 genera were obtained. Out of these, 65 isolates were from large farms, 74 from small farms, 54 from road side vendors and 33 from supermarket eggs. Statistical analysis with χ2 test revealed no significant difference (P< 0.05) in the number of isolates between different sources of collection. Organisms of the family Enterobacteriaceae is the most commonly isolated contaminant from all of the sources under study. Escherichia coli and Enterobacter spp. were isolated from each of the four locations. Other genera isolated from at least 1 of the 4 locations include Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Proteus, Salmonella, Acinetobacter, Cedecea, Serratia, Pantoea and Providencia. The non-Enterobacteriaceae isolated and identified include Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, Aerococcus and Bacillus.
