Endurance
In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and twenty-seven men sailed to Antarctica. They wanted to be the first people to cross Antarctica on foot. However, before they arrived, their ship, the "Endurance," became frozen in the ice. They were unable to move. For ten months, they waited. Finally, the ice destroyed the "Endurance." Shackleton and his men left the ship. For another five months, they lived on the ice. They had little food. They waited for warmer weather. Finally, they sailed in three lifeboats to a nearby island. However, nobody lived there. Shackleton knew they had no hope of rescue. He took five men and one boat and went to find help. In terrible weather and freezing cold, they sailed 800 miles to another island where they knew there were people. When they arrived, they walked thirty miles over high mountains in deep snow to get help. They then returned to save the rest of the men. It was one of the most extraordinary journeys in history. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that everyone got home safely.
