PhD studies
A doctoral education is an opportunity to acquire high-level expertise in a specific area. At the same time, the studies give a broad overview of the discipline.
PhD studies are offered by all six departments and by the Research Policy Institute at the School of Economics and Management. It is often given in collaboration with other parts of Lund University or in collaboration with other institutions in Sweden. The attractiveness of the programme is high, with some 300 applications for approximately 25 positions on an annual basis.
In most cases, the programme ends with a PhD degree, normally taking four years of full-time study, but there is also a possibility to leave the programme with a licentiate degree after two years of full-time study.
The programme differs somewhat between disciplines, but in all cases it consists of at least one year of course work and at least two years spent writing the PhD thesis (for the PhD degree). Some of the courses are compulsory, and are taken by all students in the programme.
Application and admission
Admission to the PhD programme requires one year of studies at the advanced level, and normally a total of three semesters of study of the discipline in question, including a half-semester thesis. The application procedures vary from one department to another. For details and for application instructions, follow the links to the departments.
