Air pollution levels in the Indian capital New Delhi is increasing by leaps and bounds. This level of pollution has increased fivefold as compared to what it was eight years ago and experts have rung the warning bells in this regard. Increased vehicle usage is the main cause of this increased air pollution. Delhiites are actually breathing in poison and the air in Delhi is likened to the air in the coal town of Jharia.
Industrialization, rise in number of automobiles on the streets and unregulated plying of transport vehicles is all contributing to this poisonous air that people of Delhi are inhaling which is leading to rampant health problems and diseases like bronchitis and asthma. Fuel is wasted and air is polluted in India. Traffic snarls and traffic jams lead to increased air pollution. A recent study surmised that cars in Noida, Dwarka, Gurgaon and South Delhi crawled at the rate of 4 kmph for over 24 minutes in a two hour period resulting in wastage of fuel and contamination of air.
In a place like Delhi, 320 kl of petrol and 100 kl of diesel are burnt daily due to idling of vehicles at traffic intersections. The quality of air is going from bad to worse and will soon reach its maximum unless some drastic measures are taken to ensure its betterment. Delhi’s RSPM levels are up fourfold as compared to prescribed limits and are edging towards the 250 microgram barrier raising serious concerns in the city.
