Energy and environment have become two of the major concerns in our time. The foreseeable depletion of fossil fuel reserves has posed a serious challenge on sustainable develop-ment. It forced the international community to take actions to tackle this issue through means like improving energy efficiency and looking for alternative energy sources. But the problem brought about by excessive energy use is far more serious than simply depleting our energy reserves. Burning fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases (GHG) such as carbon dioxide and nitrous dioxide, which not only pollute our living environment but also contribute to global warming. Hence, these two closely related issues, energy and environment, are often addressed together. However, commitments made by the international community to address these issues, such as Kyoto Protocol, can only be realized with efforts from all sectors of an economy, especially those energy intensive ones.
