On October 20, Michael Kors Holdings Limited (KORS) will launch its Michael Kors X Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 instant film camera. Prior to getting to the specs, price, and other details for the new camera, it should be noted that luxury accessories designer Michael Kors will not be the next Polaroid. Polaroid was a major hit in the 1970s thanks to instant photos, but the technology ran its course and Polaroid faded away. The only similarity here is instant physical photos. Unlike Polaroid, Michael Kors is diversified, and its new cameras target fashion, not a mass audience.
Michael Kors X Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 features will include:
Exclusive gold metallic color
Michael Kors logo on lens
Designer’s autograph on camera door
Special selfie mode (automatic adjustments to selfie mode when necessary)
High-performance flash (automatically calculates surrounding brightness and adjusts shutter speeds accordingly)
The Michael Kors X Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 came to reality thanks to a collaboration between Michael Kors and Fujifilm. For Fujifilm, it’s the company’s first fashion partnership. The new camera will cost $149. If you want to add a gold chain, it will cost an extra $28.
A new fashionable camera that prints instant digital photos definitely offers potential, especially at that price point. At the same time, it’s important to notice the bigger trend here. At one time, Michael Kors was only about fashionable attire. It recently launched a smart watch, and now it’s collaborating on a camera. Michael Kors seems to be leveraging its brand name to extend into other categories, which has the potential to add revenue streams.
KORS has appreciated 15.21% over the past 12 months versus 10.11% for the S&P 500, but as a growth company, there is no dividend. The short interest is relatively high at 10.68%.
