Australian antigenemia has been reported
to be common in Africa (54) and may occur
in 10% of populations in tropical Africa (10).
The last authors correlated its presence with
the prevalence of malaria. They also found
that 28 of 187 collections of identified mosquitoes
trapped in tropical Africa were carrying
Australian antigen. As there was no difference
in the prevalence of Australian antigen
in different mosquito species, they suggested
that transmission of Australian antigen
was a nonspecific effect of blood sucking
insects. They postulated, as they found the
