Although much theoretical research on risk in agriculture and its management has been done (see for example Hardaker et al., 1997), useful practical insight for policymakers, advisers, and developers and sellers of (new) risk management strategies is generally very limited. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to provide empirical insight into: (1) Farmers’ perceptions of risk and risk management; and (2) characteristics of a farm and/or farmer that relate to these perceptions. Data originate from a large sample of livestock farmers in the Netherlands and have been gathered by a questionnaire survey.
