The chromatographic system consisted of a Breeze HPLC system, equipped with a photo diode array detector (2998 PDA), Empower 3 Software, a binary pump (1525), a vacuum degasser andanautosampler (2707)(Waters, Canada). The chromatographic separation of 5-hydroxy-2-methylfurfural was performed on a Phenomenex column (Luna C18, 5.0lm, 4.6150mm) at 30C. The mobile phase consisted of water (with 0.5% formic acid) and acetonitrile in the ratio 90:10 (v/v) under isocratic conditions, at a flow rate of 0.8mLmin1 with an injection volume of 30.0lL. The detection was carried out at 285 nm and the total run time was 8min. All aqueous samples solutions were filtered on 0.45 lm nylon filters before injection on chromatographic system.
