EU policy on reducing environmental impacts of air transport
The White Paper Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area (EC, 2011a) sets out a vision for a competitive and sustainable transport system, and provides the foundation for the vision on air transport specified in Flightpath 2050
(EC, 2011a). In becoming a world leader in sustainable air transport, the EU has set stringent targets for reducing environmental impacts, and ensuring the safety and security of aircraft and ground facilities. Achieving these targets requires full understanding of the impact of air transport on the atmosphere in order to mitigate the environmental impacts of the anticipated rapid increase in air traffic (EC, 2011a). Achieving 40% low-carbon fuels in air transport by 2050 would significantly reduce the sector’s contribution to CO2 emissions and thus to climate change, and would also improve air quality in and around airports.
