The focus of this field problem is to establish a structured on-the-job training system
at a printed circuit board manufacturing company. At the request of the company, the
exact name is not disclosed. The company will hereafter be referred to as ALIAS PCB
Technologies, Inc. There is currently no formal system of operator training, thus
operators follow an unstructured plan of job shadowing. Properly structured and
executed operator training can be an effective method to increase productivity, shorten
learning curves, and lower scrap rates in manufacturing operations. This field study will
discuss the steps required to establish a structured system of operator training.
