New technologies account for much of the enhanced levels of productivity achieved in recent year. But new technology seldom can be introduced without also providing training in its use. When Health Partner installed a major upgrade to its data processing system, employee needed to upgrade their skills to use it. The training program was made up of numerous 45-minute sessions that could easily be scheduled into any workday. Employee were encouraged to retake session as many time as they needed to develop a sense of mastery. Besides technical training, employee were taught about the longer term benefits that would be realized once they all could use the new technology. Discussions about the inevitable stresses that accompany major change were also included. Soon employees were speeding through the program, and customer complaints dropped to nearly none.
