10 years after the Tsunami lesson learnt: What can we achieve?
Dr. Anuchar Sethasathien, Secretary-General, NIEM
Although we did what we could 10 years ago, emergency medicine was not yet an established practice in Thailand. Since then there has been marked progress in the field of emergency medicine.
Thailand’s history in emergency medical response can be divided into three stages. The first is the development of Chinese emergency volunteer organization, the second is the development of community-organized response, and the third is nationwide emergency medical response.
We are currently in this third stage. In 2004 there was a marked lack of funds for emergency medical response. In addition, there was no coordinated medical response. The institution of emergency medical response teams since then has increased emergency response capacity not only for an event such as a tsunami but also for more day-to-day emergencies. The 1669 emergency service number allows anyone in need to quickly receive necessary emergency medical care. Land, air and sea transport ensures that all areas are accessible.
