Women were followed every 90 days through the infants’ first year of life, beginning with a phone call approximately 1 week after the due date to confirm each infant’s date of birth. When participants’ infants were approximately 12 months old, women were contacted to schedule the Time 2 interview (mean infant age at time of interview was 13.3 months, SD 5 1.8 months). Mothers and infants came to the laboratory and participated first in the Strange Sit- uation procedure (Ainsworth et al., 1978). Afterward, a research assistant met with the mother to administer interviews and questionnaires while another assistant played with the infant. Women were paid $75 and given a baby gift worth $8 after com- pletion of the Time 2 interview.
