Postal company fined $11.7m for losing millions of letters and parcels. A large postal company has been fined $11.7m for allowing millions of letters and parcels to be lost or stolen because of poor supervision of agency staff. The fine will cut the company's operating profit by 2% this year. The company was also criticized for having very low standards in its operation procedures. In one case one man had been employed who had been jailed for robbing a post office. The postal company said it would appeal against the fine within 28 days and promised to do all in its power to reverse the unreasonable amount of the fine. A spokesman said it was unfair to be fined by such a large amount and did not take into consideration millions of dollars of compensation paid to customers. The fine dates back to events that happened two years ago when the postal company was going through major operational changes but the company is now considered to be providing a much better quality of service with most of its mail arriving safely and on time. Consumer groups welcomed the fine, though its chairwoman, Bridget Jones, said it was too small. She said customers would welcome the penalty because the service was far from satisfactory.
