Variability of HbA1c measurements depends on both
analytical and biological variation (BV). Biological variation
has generally been defined as “random fluctuation around
a homeostatic set point,” and it is the sum of two
components: intraindividual and interindividual BV.71,72
Hemoglobin A1c is subject to BV and has been reported
in individuals without diabetes,73 where MBG has little
impact on HbA1c levels. However, because HbA1c
concentrations have been used for individual patient
management, only analytical imprecision
