Miko's father is in pain. He hurt his foot while hunting. It hurts. He cries out. But Miko cannot hear him. She is not at home. She is far away.
Miko is walking. Miko is walking far away from home. She is alone. But she is not afraid. She still walks. She walks with her head down.
Why is Miko walking with her head down? And why is she so far from home?
She is walking because she is looking for something. She is looking for a plant. But it is not an ordinary plant. This plant is special. This plant is not like most other plants. It is called Black Sage.
You see, Miko is Native American. She is part of the Chumash people. The Chumash lived in California before anyone else. The land belonged to them. It was all theirs. And they loved it. They cared for it. They protected it.
The Chumash know about the land. They know about the sky. They know about the animals. They know about the plants. They know that some plants can be used to make medicine. This is why Miko walks with her head down. She is looking for a plant. She will use it to make medicine. The medicine will help her father. The medicine will make his pain go away.
Suddenly, Miko stops walking. She bends down. She picks a plant from the ground. She looks at it closely. She smiles. It is the one she has been looking for.
She puts the plant in her bag. She looks up. The sun is gone. The sky is dark. She is alone. But she is not lost. She will use the stars. She will use the stars to guide her home..
