D. trunculus, commonly known as the coquina clam or wedge shell, has a trapezoidal shell nearly twice as long as wide. It is brownish yellow with somewhat darker bands and thin radial lines and is slightly purple inside. C. gallina is triangular in shape, whitish in colour (sometimes brownish or greyish) and has about 80 thin, somewhat irregular concentric ribs.
