Decreased HDL cholesterol (0.9270.16 mmol/l) and elevated triacylglycerol concentrations (2.6971.53 mmol/l) were found in the type II diabetic group; therefore, using the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, individuals with type II diabetes were also characterized by metabolic syndrome (Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults, 2001).
