NICE (2008) guidelines on the prevention and treatment of surgical site infection and the DH (2007) High Impact Intervention care bundle recommend dressing applied in theatre should remain in situ for at least 48 hours before removal, to prevent the entry of microorganisms and promote healing. Dressings should be removed before this time only if there is excessive leakage from the dressing. Nurses should ensure that any signs and symptoms of infection in patients are discussed with surgeons responsible for the care of these patients to ensure timely and appropriate treatment. Patients who are at high risk of developing SSI after surgery or those who develop serious infections should be referred to the tissue viability specialist for wound management
