The term leader encompasses an extremely diverse group. It includes fast-food restaurant managers, accountants, lawyers, administrators in various industries, and medical and financial managers. The supply of qualified women for these management jobs has increased steadily, as more women accumulate the necessary experience and education. However, they are more likely to occupy positions of leadership in fields in which the majority of those employed in non-management jobs are women. Thus, women leaders are more likely to be found in the service, insurance, and real estate industries and less likely to be found in manufacturing, construction, public utilities, and transportation industries (Nelson and Burke, 2000).
