Coconut fibers were extracted either by water retting or mechanical
processing . The water retting process is strenuous,
time-consuming and unhygienic. It causes high pollution of surface
water and results in accumulation of large dumps of pith . Direct extraction of fiber from green coconut husk is
mechanically done for production of Brown fiber. The present technology is
energy intensive and not suitable for small-scale industry. Mechanical fiber
extractors may be improved for energy efficiency. In the literature, neither
the standard test methods nor any tested data for testing on mechanical
properties of coconut husk, which is a raw material for fiber production, are
available. During fiber extraction the husk has to undergo various breaking
forces, viz., tensile, compressive, bending and tearing once inside the
extraction machine. In the present study, an attempt has been made to find
out reliable process to determine mechanical properties of husk. It may help
in finding correlations with coconut fiber properties as well as designing
