Many organic and inorganic chemical reagents are used in the textile sector, and dyes and metals can have both direct and indirect toxic effects on humans in the form of tumors, cancers, and allergies; moreover, they have been shown to inhibit growth at different trophic levels, including bacteria, protozoans, algae, plants and animals. Consequently, the self-purification ability of streams and conventional biological treatment systems are hindered by the presence of dyes and metals.
