Biofuels
• Biofuel production based on agricultural commodities increased
more than threefold from 2000 to 2008 and accounts for nearly
two percent of the world’s consumption of transport fuels.
• Agricultural feedstock for the production of biofuels would be a real
risk for food security.
• Global biofuel production may increase to 192 billion
• litres in 2018 depending inter alia on the future price of crude oils
and on support policies in major countries.
• the demand for agricultural feedstocks (sugar, maize, oilseeds)
• for liquid biofuels is expected to continue its growth over the next
decade and perhaps beyond, putting upward pressure on food prices.
