2.8.1. Financial Motivation. Context-specific financial motivation for participating in the study was measured using modified items from the Motives for Physical Activities Measure [37]. Before answering these questions, the nature of the study was explained to participants and, specifically, the potential for earning performance-contingent financial incentives in exchange for making healthy behavior changes. Seven items were altered to ask about eating as well as activity changes and the degree to which financial incentives were a motive for participating in the study (e.g., “Because I want to earn extra money”; α = .97). Participants responded on a 7-point Likert scale (1: not at all true for me; 7: very true for me).
