Treatments were assigned in a factorial design of 3 positions
on the branch (base, middle, and apex) and four stem cuttings
length (10, 15, 20, and 25 cm) with 3 replications. Randomly
selected secondary branches were divided into three pieces of
equal length corresponding to the positions in the branch.
Only the lower part of each piece was used for the preparation
of the stem cuttings, i.e., a same piece was not used for
making two stem cuttings.
The cuttings were planted in 3 L pots filled with a mix of
bovine manure and sand (1:2 v:v). At 70 DAP, data was taken
on survival rate, counting of developing buds, counting and
length of branches at least 2.5 cm long, counting and area of
leaves, and shoot and root dry weight. Cuttings that sprouted
but did not grow into branches and leaves were considered
dead for calculation of surviving rate. Leaf area was estimated
in all plants as described in Section 2.1 [18]. Except for survival
rate, dead plants were not considered in the analysis.
Survival rate was analyzed with Logistic Regression. Simple
Linear Regression was used for analyzing the effect of length on
growth characteristics. When a significant interaction between
length and position on the branch was detected, a separate
analysis of regression was made for each position on the branch.
Effect of position on the branch was submitted to Analysis of
Variance, and means were compared by Tukey test
