The purpose of this chapter is to describe the research
procedures used in conducting this study. First, the population,
sample, and instrumentation will be described. Then the academic
aspects of the Twenty-first Century Mathematics Center for Urban
Schools (The Center) will be detailed. This will be followed by a
discussion of the pilot study, the procedures, design, and analysis of
data.
This study is a quasi-experimental design in which the
subjects were assigned to the experimental group based on selfselection
for participation in The Center. All subjects attended the
same public high school in Philadelphia.
