There are many dissolved minerals and organic constituents present in groundwater in various concentrations. Among them the most common dissolved mineral substances are sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, and sulphate. In water chemistry, these substances are called common constituents. They are not harmful if they are within permissible limits. Few elements are highly toxic and hazardous to health of both human and animals. Groundwater is less susceptible to bacterial pollution than surface water because the soil and rocks through which groundwater flows screen out most of the bacteria. Bacteria, however, occasionally find their way into groundwater, sometimes in dangerous concentrations. But the bacterial pollution is not considered for the present study.
