“I Cephalopoda is a class of Mollusca that appeared ~500 million years ago and that lives in the
marine environment. Cephalopods are represented by two major extant groups: Nautiloidea (nautilus)
and Coleoidea. The coleoids are organized into Octopodiformes (Vampyromorpha, vampire squids;
and Octopoda, octopuses) and Decapodiformes (squids and cuttlefishes) (Figure 1). Although
cephalopods are represented by relatively few species (~700), they are widely distributed in many
different oceanic habitats.
